BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure.
It is a comprehensive technology package that encompasses the engine, energy management and the vehicle concept – and comes with every BMW. The intelligent drive combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine with an electric motor is responsible for the vehicle's increased performance while consuming the same amount of fuel. Optimised aerodynamics contribute to further increased efficiency, as does BMW EfficientLightweight, which simultaneously lowers weight and increases vehicle rigidity by using the right materials for the right parts. Once again, BMW impressively proves its powers of innovation. It is a comprehensive collection of technologies, including an intelligent energy management system and the optional ECO PRO mode, which supports driving that optimises fuel consumption.

  • EU6 emission norm

    The pioneering technologies in the BMW X5 engines already meet the strict EU6 emission norm.
    BMW engines have always been ahead of their time because they have been the core competency of BMW since 1917. The engines in the BMW X5 provide particularly impressive proof of this. With outstanding performance, spontaneous response and commendably smooth running, it meets the highest standards of driving comfort.
    Another reason to look forward with confidence is BMW BluePerformance technology, which is standard in all diesel models. Thanks this technology, it has been possible to optimise the emissions response of diesel engines even further. In addition to the diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, there is also an NOx catalyst storage which further reduces the level of nitric oxide in the exhaust gas. A further method of nitric oxide reduction is also used: the SCR catalytic converter (SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue Injection. A chemical reaction triggered by injection of the urea solution AdBlue greatly reduces nitric oxide emissions. In this way, you can be sure that you drive one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world with greatly reduced exhaust emissions that meet the requirements of the strict EU6 emissions norm.

8-speed Steptronic transmission


The 8-speed Steptronic transmission sets a new benchmark in terms of dynamic performance and efficiency and is a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics.
The particularly finely tuned gradation of the gears allows optimum power delivery − from low through to high speeds. This reduces fuel consumption significantly, while enabling you to enjoy increased sporty flair and dynamic performance.
At high speeds in particular, the additional gears reduce engine speed and therefore both fuel consumption and engine noise. The converter clutch is a contributing factor here − even if you change into manual shift mode. In combination with the fast engine speed transitions and the precise transmission tuning, it provides a very high level of shift comfort and reduces noise considerably.

BMW X5 M50d.

The BMW X5 M50d benefits from the unique expertise of BMW M engineers, with a special, fine-tuned powertrain, suspension and steering system. The end result is an automobile that offers an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability.

  • Engine

    The M Performance TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder diesel engine combines common rail direct injection and a unique three-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Extremely eager response, high torque at low revs and a wide rev range characterise this exceptional power unit.
    These engine characteristics make for spontaneous dynamics, with 740 Nm torque, a peak output of 280 kW (381 hp) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. This impressive performance combines with average fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 173 g/km to produce an outstanding dynamics-to-efficiency ratio, thus once again underlining the innovative power of BMW.

  • Suspension

    The Adaptive M Suspension ensures that the BMW X typical agility takes an even sportier quality on board. Dynamic Damping Control and air suspension for the rear axle are designed for an ultra-sporty drive, profiting from exact, precisely-controllable handling qualities.
    The Adaptive Suspension Package Dynamic gives the BMW X5 M50d maximum agility, precision and lateral dynamics. Model-specific Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Drive guarantee even more neutral steering and reduce body side tilt on bends.

    Maximum driving comfort while retaining hallmark BMW driving dynamics properties: the Adaptive Suspension Package Comfort allows you to individually adjust the suspension and damping response at any time. The rear axle air suspension included guarantees a consistently high level of driving comfort regardless of the car's load state.
    If you want a more dynamic suspension set-up at times, Driving Experience Control offers you the additional options of Sport and Sport+ mode.

  • Dynamic

    The Adaptive Suspension Package Dynamic lets you further optimise the dynamic potential of your car. Dynamic Performance Control, included in the feature, and Dynamic Drive guarantee very sporty driving dynamics in general, reflected mainly in a very neutral steering response and minimum side tilt of the body when taking bends − and all this while retaining a high level of drive comfort.

    The best of both worlds is provided by the Active Suspension Package Professional, which combines the features of the Adaptive Suspension Package Comfort and the Adaptive Suspension Package Dynamic, for both maximum driving comfort and outstanding driving dynamics.

  • Adaptive M Suspension

    Increased driving dynamics: the Adaptive M Suspension gets maximum potential out of your car. Features include Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension on the rear axle, with a set-up designed for a particularly sporty driving response. The Adaptive M Suspension is only available as part of the M Sport package.


The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road surface conditions, ensuring optimal traction at all times. xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensure that the BMW remains safe and stable. Controlled via the DSC sensor system, xDrive flexibly and quickly distributes drive power between the axles in order to prevent oversteer or understeer on bends, thereby ensuring outstanding directional stability. Moreover, it guarantees a rapid, safe acceleration even on slippery or steep stretches. In critical road conditions, the DSC doesn't need to intervene as much. Thus, BMW xDrive combines all the advantages of an all-wheel drive system – traction, directional stability and driving safety – with classic BMW agility.


The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

  • Air Curtain and Air Breather

    The front apron is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of "curtain" on the outer side of the wheels. Then there’s the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

  • Air vent control

    The automatic air vent control uses a sensor to continuously assess the current cooling needs of the engine and opens or closes the radiator air vents in response. This optimises aerodynamics and shortens the warm-up phase for reduced fuel consumption.

  • Rear spoiler and Air Blade

    The rear spoiler at the roof edge and the Air Blades joined to it at the sides go together to form a highly efficient so-called "trailing edge". The precisely defined air flow at the rear reduces disruptive air swirl and the braking effect of negative pressure to a minimum.


The ECO PRO mode helps drivers reduce their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on their driving style – according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study. Additional functions such as coasting, Route-ahead assistant and ECO PRO route have the potential for an additional five percent reduction in consumption.
The coasting function decouples the drivetrain from the engine and the vehicle rolls without additional power input. The car "coasts" when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes. Based on data from the navigation system, the Route-ahead assistant recognises bends, built-up areas, speed limits and motorway exits, and gives the driver advance tips when to stop accelerating. ECO PRO route shows the most efficient route based on the traffic situation, driving style and road conditions. The on-board computer displays the percentage of fuel that can be saved by driving along the route selected by ECO PRO route.
